UpMerch

sales partner

April 2023 • Medina, OH

What I liked

I like the way the company is organized and structured. Even as an online intern, I have a wonderful assistant from the manager who is prompt with every message that I need. Furthermore, there are different assistance and job platforms that help me discover not only new marketing skills but also motivational messages to enhance my goal each week.

What I wish was different

I wish to have the same company here in Africa, where people can also discover those good qualities in jobs. The company can also start to extend its activities by even buying those printing machines in order to control the quality of the product.

Advice

I am loving each step of how the company reaches out to its customers via different sales partners across the world. Overall, the company does not hold any of the garment printing machines. By working with different local companies, Up Merch puts smiles on the faces of its clients through their promptness and quality work.

What I liked

I loved how supportive and fun the team is. Liz is amazing and so was my CPC Rachel. Hannah is also another CPC, and I’ve spoken with her a bit. Both great! This job is fun, creative, and helpful in learning about sales

What I wish was different

I wish the internship was paid even if it was a low amount of money. It can feel discouraging to not make sales and also not be getting paid. I do understand why it is commission based, though.

Advice

Try new things! I loved talking to people about what I do because I loved it and because it encouraged me to go outside my comfort zone.

What I liked

I love the flexibility of the Sales Partner position! I can make my own hours and meet my own personal goals, rather than getting lost in the crowd of other interns. It has been amazing to work with influencers and see how they can turn their following into a profit. At first, I was a little bit nervous about the position being "performance based," but if you are goal oriented and maximize your network of customers, you will truly excel in this job!!

Sales Partner

June 2022 • Pittsburgh, PA

What I liked

There were several things I liked about this internship. First, I, personally, like the fact that it's performance-based, and you get out of it what you put into it. To me, that's motivation to work harder so you can make more money. There really is no limit on how much $ you can make here, it just all depends on how much effort you put in. Going off of that, I also like the entrepreneurial aspect of it. You pretty much are running your own business, and you are the only person in charge of whether that business is successful or not. That's the way I think about it. Lastly, I really enjoyed the learning/educational aspect of the Sales Partner position as well. Sales was never something I considered before getting this internship, and through the Ditch the Pitch program I've learned a lot of valuable lessons and techniques. I also have enjoyed learning about the merchandise/apparel industry and the inner-workings of it.

What I wish was different

Overall I really did enjoy this internship, and I don't think I necessarily would've changed anything, but one thing that I think could be helpful to add is a way to encourage partners to do more work on their off-days. Even though I know it is a performance-based position and partners are only hurting themselves by not putting in the work on the off-days, I've just always found incentive programs to be helpful in terms of motivation. Something like the "First 10 Completed Orders" competition, but on a smaller scale just for putting in the effort. Like if there was a way to track and prove how many of the Afternoon Tasks (and beyond just those) people have finished, and a way to earn points through that, I think that would be cool.

Advice

I think the best advice I could give about my experience is Put in the WORK! Like I mentioned earlier, there really is not a limit on how much money you can, and that's one of the reasons I like it so much. If you really wanted to, you could literally sit on your phone or computer and DM/E-mail/Call every college club/organization/frat/sorority, every local business, every highschool, or every influencer in the COUNTRY (ok well that might take a while but you get the point). The more people you contact, the more likely you are to make a sale. I would make a schedule for each day of the week and set a number/goal for how many people youre goint to contact that day. Setting goals for yourself is very important!

What I liked

The UpMerch Sales Partner program gave a huge insight and support system on running your own small business! Everyone is dedicated, kind, and there to help support you in anyway. Plus, there’s lots of vital information when it comes to learning about the world of business. It’s a great program!

What I wish was different

It is a commissioned based position, so you will not be paid hourly.

Advice

Get out of your comfort zone and try it out. This is a great opportunity to learn more about yourself and your professional career development. Don’t be the one to sit and not say anything. The more effort you put into the program, the more your earn out of it!

What I liked

There were many things that I liked about the internship and even now as a new sales partner. And one of those aspects was how attentive, available, and helpful the whole UpMerch HQ team is whenever I needed help with anything. They don't leave you to figure things out on your own. Another aspect I liked was having morning meetings that were essentially morning classes that gave crucial information pertaining not just to sales and marketing, but about the whole custom apparel industry and the business sector overall.

What I wish was different

Personally, I really enjoyed how my internship experience went, but there was one thing I saw another sales partner recommend that be added to the internship program that I think is a great idea, and I would like to reiterate. And that is adding more incentives to foster more motivation. I liked the First 10 Orders Summer Competition, but I think it would've been great to have a points and leaderboard system relating to completing individual afternoon tasks (and more) as well. These incentives don't even have to be money incentivized, and instead can be a way to see how you fare against other sales partners to motivate you to work just as hard or more.

Advice

Put in the work! It's a commission based position, so however much time and effort you put into it, you'll get in return. Everyone has a different path to how they reach their success in this position. It's quick to build a book of business for some, while it might be a slower process for others. But as long as you stick to it, you'll get there. Just keep in mind that persistence is key when reaching out to new customers and closing orders. So, be social (very important) and get out of your comfort zone (most important)! Don't let the position give you value, give value to the position!

I will never be able to fully thank UpMerch for all of the good it has done for me, whether it is career-oriented or connection-oriented. The leadership and ability for personal growth through UpMerch is unparalleled, and I've been lucky to have excellent mentors throughout my time here. The sales knowledge, marketing tactics, prospecting tips, and morale support have been incredible for my very young career, and I have nothing but positive things to say. You've given a college student a career path and a passion, and for that, I am forever in your debt. Thanks UpMerch, and more importantly, thank you Liz.

What I liked

Working at UpMerch has helped me improve upon my sales and communication skills exponentially. I have had the opportunity to network with some big influencers and athletes, and through working with these types of clients I have learned the importance of keeping your customers satisfied. I also love the entrepreneurial aspect of this job, and that you have the ability to work on your own schedule. The amount of success you achieve is directly correlated with the amount of effort you put into the position. There is truly unlimited earning potential at this position, and I would recommend this job to any college student looking to enhance their entrepreneurial and sales skills.

Advice

I would advise new sales partners to network with influencers! There is so much untapped potential in this market that many sales partners seem to ignore. I would also say to stay active and collaborate with your colleagues on order ideas.

What I liked

I enjoyed the experience of getting to see different practices of marketing and all the factors that go into production, selling, shipping, and creation of merchandise. I liked that it was online and we didn't have to meet in an office all the time.

What I wish was different

I wish that there was more personal one-on-one time with experienced Upmerch sales partners outside of the main meetings with all the sales partners. Feel it would have been more beneficial in my time as a sales employee.

Advice

I would say to really try to find customer's that truly need your service and try and network with the sales partners that have already been working there.

I love how at UpMerch, the full time staff really cares about their employees. I always have access to help or advice from Liz and the rest of the team. Also, there are mental health workshops and virtual parties to have fun with the people you work with.

What I liked

Ever since I started working for UpMerch last year, I have absolutely loved everything about it. The flexibility, the commission, the atmosphere and energy of the staff, and of course, the opportunity to grow as a business and sales woman has shaped me and helped me find my passion for sales and entrepreneurship. It is not a difficult job for me because I enjoy prospecting and meeting with customers, and the unlimited earning potential we are granted only motivates me to do more in this position. I highly recommend this opportunity with UpMerch for anyone and everyone in college who is pursuing sales and/or entrepreneurship!

Advice

Being involved on campus obviously helps a lot as a sales partner, but most of my success in this job has come from my own innovation and persistent attitude with organizations on campus. There does not need to be a specific event or reason to create a shirt order; you just have to come up with one first and get it out there! Don't wait for opportunities or for people to come to you, make them yourself!

What I liked

UpMerch's Summer Internship was an amazing experience that offered in depth sales training from sales professionals and guest speakers. It's hybrid work schedule with only two days in the office allowed me to refine my skills and prospect potential clients while still having the opportunity to enjoy nice summer days. As a current out of office Sales Representative, I have the opportunity to make sales, expand my network, and continue my sales education with UpMerch while taking classes. Lastly, working for UpMerch has been a ton of fun with its great company culture and people, and I would recommend this position to anyone looking for a good side hustle!
