Patient Service Representative
July - December 2019 • Lancaster, PA
What I liked
The work environment is supportive, nurturing, and caring. The company really cares for their employees.
What I wish was different
In the establishment of my office, there were a lot of things that were not thought through (ie. certain tests were not ordered, patients were not notified to switch over their insurances, not a big enough staff, etc.)
Advice
Working for UPMC should be a career-goal. I wouldn't recommend going in for one summer. The company invests so much in their employees, I wish I could have stayed as long as possible.

Nursing Extern
June - August 2019 • Harrisburg, PA
What I liked
I liked that I got to be in the operating room. This is something that we don’t get to see in clinical rotations so it was interesting. I learned so much because it was one on one with a nurse.
What I wish was different
I wish that I had the opportunity to be more hands on experience. This was more of an observation opportunity.
Advice
My advice is that you go into this experience with an open mind. You move around to see different things everyday.

Occupational Therapy Student
April - June 2019 • Mechanicsburg, PA
What I liked
I really liked how the therapy department was run at the hospital and how clear communication was between disciplines of OT, PT and SLP. As a student, I never felt pressured to begin something that I did not feel comfortable doing, however my supervisor challenged me to the "just-right challenge" so that I could succeed. My direct supervisor gave me the perfect amount of supervision as I refined my skills as an occupational therapy student. I was given ample opportunities to expand my knowledge and learning by observing surgeries and observing a physical therapist in a NICU setting. All of the therapists at UPMC Pinnacle were always willing to advance my learning by including me in their daily work endeavors.
What I wish was different
I wish I was able to gain a better experience shadowing/observing an acute rehabilitation hospital setting. I went to Carlisle Hospital to shadow their inpatient acute rehabilitation hospital and how the therapists interacted with clients on a daily basis, but I did not feel like I got the best experience there. Most of the therapists were very repetitive with their treatment sessions and I did not feel that they truly were completing holistic therapeutic interventions.
Advice
This company is excellent with setting up their students with extra work outside of fieldwork experience and for preparing them to work in the hospital setting. I highly recommend reading over and studying the course materials that the rehabilitation services department provides for OT students as it was very beneficial to understanding patient charts and when making decisions on whether or not certain patients were appropriate to see or not.

Patient Care Assistant
June 2019 • Mechanicsburg, PA
What I liked
My coworkers were helpful and supportive as I learned my role as a PCA and management was easy to talk to in addition to being flexible with my work schedule.
What I wish was different
Sometimes staffing was low, but I feel in my job that may happen sometimes depending on patient needs.
Advice
Working in the healthcare field is very humbling. I would encourage everyone to do it for at least a day to see how hard it is as a healthcare worker and to have more sympathy for people battling chronic ailments.
