I love the experience I got, and continue to get, in a health care setting. It is extremely relevant to my major, nursing, and has really put me a step ahead of my classmate in terms of the knowledge I carried with me into the program.
What I wish was different
I wish that I had been on the floor with nurses more often, but mostly I act as a patient safety companion. It has taught me very much about communication, but limited the amount of clinical experience I was/am looking for.
Advice
I would suggest to incoming employees to do their best to be outgoing, and to break down the barriers that prevent effective communication. Have relationships with your coworkers, and, more importantly, your patients. You’ll underestimate the power you have to make them feel more comfortable and safe during a trying time.
