I enjoyed helping prospective students get assimilated to campus life and living on campus. I liked when students had questions or concerns that I could help with to make them feel at home here at UWP.
What I wish was different
I wish this experience didn’t have to be remote, but I still had a lot of fun communicating with students via zoom, canvas, and email.
Advice
Have fun and be personable! Students want to hear YOUR experiences, favorite classes, favorite spots on campus etc. to help them navigate the new experience of college life.

What I liked
The people that I work with. They are all older than me but still treat me as a professional employee who genuinely care about my well being and personal life. They also put forth their best effort to make sure that I obtain tasks that will help me in my future career.
What I wish was different
I wish there was a little more traffic in the office. Summertime is slow around any college campus, especially coming off of a year after Covid. It's nice to see friendly faces and get to work on communication and people skills.
Advice
I would share that stepping out of your comfort zone is the best way to create relationships that will benefit you in more ways than one. Taking a leap of faith is always scary, but you never know what kind of people, things, and opportunities will be presented to you because of it.

Enjoyed working with the dairy cattle again. Also interesting to see a different side of agriculture. I have always focused on the large picture of agriculture instead of looking at the little things like research. Research is extremely important for the industry, but also for growing knowledge.

Undergraduate Researcher
July 2018 • Platteville, WI
What I liked
I sincerely enjoyed the opportunity to learn about academia, research, and the importance of research to progressing society. The Summer Undergraduate Scholars Program (SUSP) met with us weekly to teach us important lesson about research like publishing, collaborating, and advising. Due to this experience, I am now seriously considering getting a PHD in Software Engineering so that I can contribute to society in a meaningful way through research.
What I wish was different
I wish there were more students with this opportunity. This year was the pilot year for SUSP. Therefore, only 10 students received the opportunity to participate. However, I have heard that the goal is to increase the size and I look forward to watching the program grow.
Advice
Don't be afraid to try something new. I had never conducted research before this summer. Now I have an in-depth knowledge of research and I am on my way to my first first-author publication.
