University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee

Help Desk Technician

July 2019 • Milwaukee, WI

What I liked

Everyone is nice and very helpful to each other. I like being able to help people solve their problems because I know how frustrating some issues can be.

What I wish was different

There is a lot of information to remember when you are starting. I wish I had more time to learn everything because I had to ask a lot of questions when I started. Everyone is open to helping and will answer any questions, but it can feel annoying having to ask for help repeatedly.

Advice

This is an excellent place if you are trying to build experience related to IT and do not have much experience elsewhere.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

May 2018 • Milwaukee, WI

What I liked

I enjoyed the motivation for deeper understanding of the concepts and effects within the research theory and modeling. I took initiative to read old publications and search through files to learn the history of the project and team. This gave me a much better and more detailed understanding of the work and goals for the research. And, I felt more confident and able to contribute more valuable input for design changes and testing ideas.

What I wish was different

I wish there was a greater sense of urgency and better operational processes. Most necessary actions before testing and next steps were halted by tasks assigned to the busier graduate students. I was a self-starter type, but there was little I could do when items had to and only could be completed by those above me.

Advice

Look into the research team and ask those of similar level what you responsibilities and activities you may perform. Learning before you begin will aid in your expectations and help you learn quicker in short time frames.
