I learned a lot of technology skills from this place.

Undergraduate Research Assistant
June 2020 • Eau Claire, WI
What I liked
The project was an interesting topic. I got to explore how to apply my major in real life situations while working beside a professor. The research was paced very well. I could work when I had the time and there was a lot of flexibility. I also learned and developed more advanced math and program skills that will help me in future jobs.
What I wish was different
I would have liked to meet with my professor in person rather than virtually, but we can't change that due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Advice
Doing research takes you out of your normal routine of classes but you still learn, grow, and develop new skills that you can't always get elsewhere. If someone were thinking about doing a research project, I would highly recommend it. They won't find this experience at such a convenience at any other time in their life-all you have to do is ask a professor if they want to do research with you!

Polymer Science Researcher
May 2019 • Eau Claire, WI
What I liked
Taking charge of my personal responsibilities and being able to apply real-world problem solving to issues that arose in synthesis or when using instrumentation
What I wish was different
I wish we didn't have to do research on the 4th floor of Phillips. All those stairs sure are laborious, but they're great exercise, nonetheless!
Advice
Research opportunities are a great first step towards something bigger like graduate school, if that's something that interests you. It also provides you with great experience in project hierarchy, technical communication, and lab safety, all of which look great to employers if you're in search of an internship or jobs elsewhere off campus!

Groundskeeping Worker
May - August 2019 • Eau Claire, WI
What I liked
Great coworkers and management. Very friendly and easy to work with.
What I wish was different
I wish I had been trained more; though, only a minor point. The training was fair but not as in-depth as I would have liked.
Advice
Don't expect to leave this experience with many new skills, but you will work hard (though, I never thought unfairly hard) and be proud of your work. You get to work very closely with others, and in our case, we all got very close over the summer. I'm very grateful for this experience and recommend it to everyone looking for a summer job!

I liked being able to work with such a high energy group of people.
What I wish was different
I wish the organization and communication between the interns would have been better.

What I liked
The hours were pretty flexible, and my coworkers were also students, and generally pretty friendly.
What I wish was different
Communication between the Front Desk Attendants and the rest of the building's staff, especially the Hall Director, was habitually poor. I often felt out of the loop and uninformed.
Advice
Be able to occupy your own time, especially if you're here for the summer.

University Maintenance
May - August 2019 • Eau Claire, WI
What I liked
I liked working with the facilities department making sure that the dorms were ready for Fall move-in 2019, as well as doing odd jobs including locks and window screening.
What I wish was different
Wish they would have given us more tools/materials to make repairs ourselves rather than just marking them down and making “small” repairs.
Advice
May involve a lot of heavy lifting and hard work some days, but usually you’re working in the dorms so its a bit of a coin flip but otherwise a good job for the Summer.

Student Assistant
September 2016 • Eau Claire, WI
What I liked
I worked on research projects with patrons of the community on a day to day basis at the Special Collections and Archives. I was one of the team leads on a processing project that involved processing and cataloging about 400 pieces of pottery. I created projects that helped market and promote the archives to the rest of the university and community. I gained more knowledge of communication and problem solving which will help me with my future career.

Advice
Be confident with the decisions you make. The projects I worked on involved a lot of creative problem solving and thinking. Trust that the decisions you make are the best.
