Chemsitry Research Assistant
May - August 2020 • University of West Florida, FL
What I liked
I got to continue research I had been doing during the regular semester, but for pay. Also, being outside of a normal school schedule I had a lot more time to be in the lab and could schedule and plan a much higher number of experiments, and even do experiments I wouldn't be able to do at all during the normal semester
What I wish was different
Due to Covid, I was limited to outside of the lab work for the first month, which wasn't super feasible with the nature of my research. It did give me time to better familiarize myself with the theoretical side of what I was doing, but to actually make progress in my research the practical side is necessary.
Advice
I would definitely recommend it, especially to anyone currently doing any kind of undergraduate research. My biggest piece of advice is that if you plan on working long days on campus and are going to be taking a lunch break, bring lunch, it will be a lot cheaper and a lot healthier than eating at panda express almost everyday, which is what I did.

Graphic Design Intern with the Art Gallery
May 2020 • Pensacola, FL
What I liked
I love the collaboration and clear communication between my team.
What I wish was different
Nothing, I enjoyed all of it and still am!
Advice
Don't get stuck under that imposter syndrome feeling, and don't let COVID hold you back from new experiences. I have blossomed at my internships during COVID because I opened my mouth when others were scared too and showed incentive. You can open your own doors instead of waiting for them to open!

Being paid through the university for research that I would have ended up performing anyways was a huge positive during this experience. It allowed me to focus entirely on the project at hand and provided for an insight into working along side other engineers.

Advice
My one piece of advice, if you are interested in performing university sponsored research is to delve deeply in to research articles in to your area of study and develop a well thought out and beneficial project to focus on before submitting a request form to your department and/or sponsors.

There are plenty of different research and development topics to delve into for computer science, and to some extent, you can decide what you'll work on.
What I wish was different

What I liked
I enjoyed learning from a faculty mentor the best methods for designing and conducting research. It made me decided to apply for graduate school.
What I wish was different
I wish I had more time to meet face-to-face with my professor. I also needed an outline of expectations for the type of product I delivered at the end. As a new independent researcher, I felt I could have done better.
