It was a great experience for my path to becoming a researcher. I had flexible hours and will be a coauthor on a publication that should come out within the next year.
What I wish was different
I wish I could have worked more, but I had to adhere to certain guidelines restricting my hours.
Advice
Definitely contact professors in your department early on to see if there are any paid summer research opportunities in your area!

Research Assistant
July 2021 • Burlington, VT
What I liked
The research was transdisciplinary so, I was able to work with fellow students who had different majors than mine which provided various perspectives. I had an opportunity to develop a survey for research and collect & analyze those data.
What I wish was different
I wished that we could have collected larger sample data that would provide concrete evidence supporting or opposing the thesis.
Advice
Collect work and internship experiences even though it might completely relate to your major because it will help you network and aid you to have knowledge in different fields.

Summer Neuroscience Undergraduate Research Fellow
May - August 2018 • Burlington, VT
What I liked
It was an easy-going summer with a really great group of students and faculty. Good pay, free housing, and not an 8-hour work day. I learned a lot about Neuroscience research and made great relationships with faculty and grad students at UVM. I am now comfortable working with rats and I also got to learn a lot about the grad school process.
What I wish was different
I have no complaints. It was an amazing opportunity!
Advice
Apply!!! I did not think I stood a chance, but I got a position. It is extremely competitive, but do not let that discourage you.

Undergraduate Research Assistant
May 2018 • Burlington, VT
What I liked
The SURF program provides an attractive offer to stay in Burlington during the summer and work on your research. I loved the fact that I could work all day and the be at north beach 15 mins after getting out. I just can’t do that where I am from.
What I wish was different
The office space was not the greatest as we had to clean out the mess from the previous occupant before working in there.
Advice
It can’t hurt to apply! Faculty are doing great research here, you just have to talk to them about it.
