What I liked

Colleagues are very nice and helpful, you can see that there’s a good relationship between everyone in the room where people can be chill and joke around each other. When it isn’t busy, you’re able to do work you have in your classes as long as you pay attention to people who come in and need the services they come for.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been actual training. Part of management is not understanding when you don’t know something even if you are new. In my experience, I was told to just “figure it out yourself” even though I had no experience with technology. I was specifically asked not to collaborate with anyone (despite other management saying that that is permitted, which is conflicting) and was left to my own devices on a problem that could’ve been easily solved had someone higher up demonstrated how to resolve the issue. This lead to an unproductive work environment due to the longer time it takes to solve it on your own.

Advice

Even though the job listing says “no experience required”—it isn’t true. If you don’t know anything about technology, it’s better to look elsewhere for a job. Most of the employees are engineering or computer science majors, so they have a better understanding of how things work. Training isn’t provided and when you make mistakes, it seems unacceptable to part of management, but mistakes are bound to happen if you don’t know anything and you’re left to figure it out on your own. If you do have experience with technology, then this is great for you! Fitting in should be a breeze and the environment is very relaxed. I’d just advise against working here if technology is not your strong suit, and you’d need tough skin because a certain part of management is a bit judgmental when you’re not up to their standards (keep in mind this is my own personal experience, having NO knowledge of technology and coming in thinking it would be a great learning opportunity).
