I love yoga of course. And I love being able to guide students in their own yoga practices. My favorite part of my job is that I can be creative with my yoga classes because I create my own sequences and choose my own playlists. It's a fun and fulfilling job that allows me to help others and also makes me a better person!
What I wish was different
I wish pay was higher. A typical studio will usually offer higher pay than what UNT offers. Also, for the style of yoga I taught, I requested a set of props (bolsters), but due to budget, it was considered low priority. This was disappointing because bolsters are an important part of a yin yoga class. And the yin yoga class had a decent amount of attendees, so I feel like it was justified in needing them.
Advice
As a group exercise instructor, you should love what you do. If you don't enjoy it or if you don't really care, your participants will notice and it's unfair for everyone if you don't want to be there. Be flexible because unexpected things will happen during class. Be punctual, it makes for a better impression if you are there to greet your students with a smile. Teach for the students' benefit, not as an opportunity to show off your own skills. Communicate if you ever need someone to substitute a class for you. Make sure you attend the mandatory employee meetings. I got written up a couple of times for missing them because I didn't wake up in time (7am meeting?? yikes). Most importantly, have fun!

WISE Counselor
May - July 2022 • Denton, TX
What I liked
I loved working with teenagers and it was related to my major and what I want to do, which is working with people that have disabilities. It was very enriching, very well paid, and very rewarding.
What I wish was different
Nothing
Advice
I thought I would not be good at this job because I am very shy, but these young adults were so amazing it was so easy to become more outgoing around them. Even if you think you will not be good at this job, once you are put in the situation you will become a great counselor. Just think that these teens look up to you and you want to be a positive influence and give them confidence forever.

Student Assistant in the Office of the Registrar
September 2018 - May 2022 • Denton, TX
What I liked
I loved working for the transcript, graduation, and rebate division of the Registrar Office. They were like a big family to me and treated me better than any other job has. They have prepared me for my future career and taught me so many valuable and applicable skills for the future. They truly value and appreciate their student assistants and treat them accordingly. On special holidays like Christmas, Thanksgiving, and on your birthday they always left very nice cards with candy. Around finals they made me a de-stress gift basket with snacks, chocolate, drinks, bath goodies, face masks, etc.. They are an AMAZING team and I'm so glad I worked with them.
What I wish was different
I don't really have any complaints for what I wish to be different. I love my team and I love working with them.
Advice
Always put your best foot forward even when dealing with students/parents that may be upset. Remember it's not them against you or you against them, its you both against the primary issue. Remember to take time for yourself when needed and it's okay to let your coworkers know when you need a break or time to yourself.

Orientation Leader
March - August 2020 • Denton, TX
What I liked
The camaraderie, pro-staff, students, and experiences I had this summer (there was a lot of team bonding involved).
What I wish was different
I wish we could have had anything in person, but, obviously, COVID prevented the traditional orientation experience for all of us.
Advice
Always keep an open mind and be flexible to any changes that may happen. Roll with the punches and trust that your superiors have your best interest in mind!

Student Assistant
August 2018 • Denton, TX
What I liked
I liked the flexibility to work remotely as well as working in person. I also liked the support from my supervisor during the pandemic by providing me with masks, cleaning supplies, and a changeable schedule.
What I wish was different
I wish that I was able to interact with more students this summer as that is part of my job.
Advice
Be open to change because that can provide so many unique opportunities. Communicate your needs and learn how to set personal boundaries with self care and communication with your coworkers so that your time outside of work is respected.

Cafeteria Server
January 2019 - April 2020 • Denton, TX
What I liked
Flexible around my schedule and university commitments. Pleasant coworkers. Meals provided every 4 hour shift.
What I wish was different
At times there would be miscommunication between coworkers. Full time staff not giving new student employees a chance because of the frequent turnaround of employees. If you stick there long enough, though, the full time staff will get to know you and they will like you.
Advice
I loved the flexibility. I could choose what days and times I wanted to work and they were understanding of my commitments. During rushes, be prepared to be on your toes. Put in hard work and you'll be noticed for it. Slack off or give management an attitude and you'll get called out. As long as you have a good work ethic you'll do well. If you're lazy, slack off, can't work with others, have an attitude problem, or have a poor ethic, working in the cafeterias is not the job for you.
