Peer Mentor

May - August 2021 • Denton, TX

What I liked

It was great being able to interact with my students almost daily and to be able to see them grow so much within the five-week program.

What I wish was different

It would have been nice if there were other students/peers of the same racial background as I, as well as additional mentors during the former half of the summer. The transition into the second session of the summer was unavoidable, but the 10 weeks of continuous work with no more than two days off a week was very difficult as a student worker.

Advice

Always keep an open mind, push yourself within personal and external contexts, but also know when to ask for help or to let those around you know when you need extra help, space, or anything else.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

May - August 2021 • Denton, TX

What I liked

Research area was challenging. I like challenges. Designing and conducting experiments for ultrasonic through wall communication systems. Specifically the use of laser vibrometry for non contact data recovery within sealed vessel. And pushing the boundaries of data transfer rates within many constraints. I enjoyed most aspects of the position.

What I wish was different

More time. I was limited to 20 hours a week. Had several discoveries that were publish worthy. But not the time to prepare adequate reports detailing methods and findings. If I could start over I would narrow the scope of the research to one specific area and publish. Funding was inadequate. I wish I could have continued working on the project. Unfortunately the grant for which I worked expired.

Advice

Take excellent notes. Document everything. Reach out when you run up against a wall or find yourself stuck. Make sure you have many contacts for people in other disciplines. Use the expertise of others instead of starting from scratch or learning the long and hard way. Unless required. Meet as often as you can with your super and ask for criticism and guidance.

Writing Tutor

June 2020 • Denton, TX

What I liked

I enjoyed the opportunity to work with clients to develop their arguments and voices. It was also important to me to stay academically engaged over the summer. My appointments gave me the chance to stay in that academic mindset.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more appointments. Over the summer, the flow of students was slower than it is during the semester.

Advice

Ask for as many hours as you think you can handle and think you can receive, especially in the summer when you have few or no classes.
