Lab Manager

May 2019 • Ann Arbor, MI

What I liked

I like the independence there is. There is a great amount of trust between my PI and I where he trusts me to get the things done that I need to do. On top of this I get to witness my graduate students' and Post-Doctorates' research. There are also great perks for working at the University of Michigan.

What I wish was different

I wish the parking in Ann Arbor would be better, to get the best bang-for-your-buck, you are walking a good amount of time to get to central campus (this is especially worse since I live an hour north). And of course, the pay could be a little better, but it is manageable as long as you are good with your money.

Advice

A job that you don't enjoy is not worth doing, but this may not be true if you are young. Our society revolves around happiness: "When we are young and in school, we say we will be happier when we get a job or go to college. When we get a job, we say we will be happier when we get our careers. When we get our careers, we will be happier when we retire. When we retire, we will be happier when we die." We need to change this trend, and trust me that finding a job that you love doing, is far more important than the money. Happiness shouldn't be bought.

FPHLP Intern/ Unified HIV Health and Beyond Intern

May - July 2019 • Ann Arbor, MI

What I liked

I got the chance to have a field placement experience before graduation as well as key information needed to build the foundation of my future Public Health career. The internship is also sponsored by the CDC, I got a chance to visit the CDC in Atlanta and will always be a CUPS scholar.

What I wish was different

More of a stipend so that we could explore the city and surrounding areas. I wish they had team bonding that gave us a chance to see the highlights of the city and more weekends off.

Advice

Apply and try to keep a level head. Network with the people there, I now have life long friends as well as life long mentors. Ask for what you want the worse they could say is no.

Machine Learning Engineer Intern

June 2019 • Ann Arbor, MI

What I liked

It was a wonderful work environment and great experience. Our ideas were supported and encouraged to be explored.

What I wish was different

The interns office was a bunch of white walls and discouraged coming into work to interact with colleagues. It’s no big deal though.

Advice

Take these kind of opportunities because machine learning and other advanced methods that are not usually offered to undergrads stand out. This wonderful opportunity was rare for someone in my education level

What I liked

Being able to travel to a new place for the summer. I liked meeting new people and the opportunity to research something new.

What I wish was different

There are few points in your life where you can just head off and leave to another university for the summer. Take advantage of summer internships.

Academic Facilitator

June - August 2019 • Ann Arbor, MI

What I liked

I enjoyed the workload and ability to enjoy my personal life outside of work. I also liked engaging with students and helping them understand things and prepare for their freshman year.

What I wish was different

I wish my interactions with co-workers / piers could have been more established and meaningful. Sometimes I felt as though I was working alone or only with other co-workers with the same position.

Advice

Working with academics and students is a very rewarding experience that teaches you soft skills and people skills. It is hard to obtain these skills from other positions you may hold.

Excavation assistant

June - August 2019 • Olynthos, Central Macedonia

What I liked

I enjoyed every bit of my excavation experience. The students who were new to the project were given the opportunity to participate in several different aspects of it in order to learn all of the jobs that are done during an excavation. We lived close to the site in a small town, which was great because we got to know each other and the townspeople very well. Also, because it was a small town, we were able to experience more of the Greek culture than would normally be possible in tourist heavy areas.

What I wish was different

I honestly wouldn't change anything about my experience.

Advice

Exchange your money before you leave! It gets very expensive to exchange once you're out of the country. Also, if you're going to explore other places, download a good offline map to help you find your way around if you're not able to get intentional data for your phone.

REU Reseacher

June - August 2019 • Ann Arbor, MI

What I liked

I enjoyed the community of fellow undergraduate researchers and the mentorship of those running the program. The presentations and outings around Ann Arbor were also great.

What I wish was different

I wish the researcher I worked under had more time to help guide me; I feel like I did very basic tasks and didn't accomplish nearly the amount the other REU students did. Also, the housing was... Interesting.

Advice

Don't be afraid to initiate conversation when you have questions or concerns.
