The project was very open-ended. My supervisor gave me very little specific guidance about what to do with the data I received for the project, which allowed me to explore the data science field in a much more interesting and engaging way than schoolwork generally allows.
What I wish was different
I just wish I'd had more time to explore! There are so many ways to analyze and present data, especially in a nonstructured project like the one I was working on, and I would have continued to explore and find new interesting patterns if I'd had the chance before the summer ended.
Advice
In terms of finding internships like this, just find a lab or a researcher that looks interesting and shoot them a personal email! And once you land a research internship, make the most of it--if you're actually invested in the work you're doing and the answers you're pursuing, it will be both fun and rewarding.
