University of Kentucky Healthcare

Student Intern

June - July 2021 • Lexington, KY

What I liked

The experience was extremely eye-opening and helped me see that working in a hospital is definitely something I want to do long-term. I interned in clinical research, and I felt like I had a lot of personal experiences not only with patients, but with employees in terms of seeing what their jobs were really like, and truly understanding what it is like in a COVID world to still have to help people who are in need of medical help.

What I wish was different

Everyone was extremely busy because of COVID and they were all doing what I felt like was multiple jobs. I do wish that I had been more involved in true clinical research observation and assistance vs. put on one project alone, but I learned a lot regardless.

Advice

Be specific about what you want to learn, in any internship. If I had been bolder about what I wanted out of the experience, I truly think the people I was working under would have allowed me to be more involved in their work, but because I was laid back about the work we were doing, I just got the work no one wanted to do. So definitely be bold and let people know what you are interested in and what you are wanting to gain from an experience.

Medical Scribe

May 2018 • Lexington, KY

What I liked

Getting to be surrounded in people as passionate about health care as I am. Additionally, every shift I work, I feel like I learn more about the field that I want to go into. This experience has steered me in the direction of what type of medicine I hope to practice in the future.

What I wish was different

Some of the doctors are unaware that I am there to help them so some shifts I do not get to help see as many patients. Therefore, I wish there was some type of name plate saying my position and that I am there.

Advice

There is no better way to learn about all aspects of healthcare, from how many people are uninsured to medical terminology, than to work as a scribe. For anyone looking to become a physician, this experience can show you if you truly want to go into the medical field.

Nursing Student Extern

May - July 2018 • Lexington, KY

What I liked

I loved being able to apply knowledge I had learned from the classroom into practice. I had a lot of help from my preceptor and other nurses to help ease me in to ultimately become as independent as possible with patient care.

What I wish was different

There’s honestly nothing I would change about this experience. It gave me a realistic view of what the life of a nurse consists of.

Advice

I would recommend the SNAP program to any nursing major looking for an internship. UK is the #1 hospital in our region. If you’re going to learn, that’s the best hospital to do it at!
