The flexibility of the job and welcoming environment.
What I wish was different
Honestly, nothing. I got this job in the beginning of summer and I am still employed throughout this school year. It’s a great experience for those going into the medical field.
Advice
The advice they gave me in the interview: “this job will be whatever you make of it”. It’s an incredible experience getting to follow doctors and help them out with administrative work. You get to meet incredibly smart and interesting people to expand your network and grow as a person.

Volunteer
January - May 2019 • Iowa City, IA
What I liked
I liked the opportunity to work with patients and staff around the hospital. It gave me insight to UIHC that I wouldn't have gotten otherwise.
What I wish was different
I wish my schedule had given me the opportunity to volunteer in a different unit.
Advice
Make the most out of volunteering at a hospital if you choose to do so. It's not the same as a job or clinical internship, but it definitely gives you a "heads up" as to what you might see.

Volunteer - Mother/Baby Unit
January 2019 • Iowa City, IA
What I liked
I got to help take care of new mothers and get them whatever they needed during their recovery, which was really rewarding. When the moms were sleeping or getting tests done, I got to hold the new babies in the nursery, which always made my heart melt.
What I wish was different
I wish their were more tasks that volunteers could do, or a way to work up to being able to do more things. There are only a certain few tasks you can cycle through, and if their are no babies in the nursery when you've finished your tasks all you can really do is sit around.
Advice
Don't be afraid to talk to people and ask questions! Most people are happy to give an answer and if they really don't have time, they are very nice about letting you know.

Pharmacy Technician
June 2020 • Iowa City, IA
What I liked
I really liked the welcoming environment, which was very friendly and a lot more enjoyable compared to the other departments I worked for at UIHC. I like the fast pace environments and how all the work is very hands on. Scheduling is also very flexible, and they give you a lot of training shifts so you are fully comfortable in working the shifts alone.
What I wish was different
I wish the shifts were shorter because the shifts are 8 hours long and the only major drawback.
Advice
Apply in the summer because it is a lot easier to learn the shifts when they are back to back compared to during the school year when you can only work about 2 shifts a week (max 20 hours)

Junior Volunteer
August 2014 - July 2016 • Iowa City, IA
What I liked
The ability to volunteer in multiple departments as a Community Volunteer in the hospital.
What I wish was different
Absolutely nothing.
Advice
Volunteering at UIHC was quit the experience, I highly suggest doing it because you don’t need any experience, there’s people that gives you task to do and tells you how to do it. Sometimes you volunteer in partners. I got a scholarship after my volunteering service.

What I wish was different
Honestly I think that this job was everything I had imagined.
Advice
It has been an amazing experience. I have learned a lot about the medical field as well as the business world and how they overlap. I highly recommend getting a job surrounding your field of interest because it will help you officially decide if that’s what you want to do for a future career. Nursing Assistant
December 2017 - March 2019 • Iowa City, IA
What I liked
I worked as a MSS Float Nursing assistant and this job has given me experiences that I couldn't have received anywhere else and that continue to be exponentially important to my nursing education.
What I wish was different
I wish I would have been able to transition to one floor instead of being a float NA, but most floors require a minimum of 20 hours a week.
Advice
I would say if you are interested in ANY career related to healthcare, the experience you gain as an NA will always be practical and applicable to your future career in healthcare.

Undergraduate Research Assistant
June - August 2019 • Iowa City, IA
What I liked
I enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about how neuroscience is deeply integrated within the average hospital scene regarding both research and clinical. I was able to shadow numerous doctors in both pediatrics and also in neuropsychology. The main aspect of my volunteering was based upon working with MRI scans and looking at the lesions of the patients and making correlations regarding the different deficits that the patients may experience. I also worked with analyzing the biomarkers of audio questionnaires of severely depressed patients and their control counterparts. This experience has helped me gain a better understanding of what I would like to do with my future and has also helped me determine that neuroscience is the perfect major for me.
What I wish was different
I only have a few complaints about the internship. The first being that it was very hard to find affordable parking but that is often a common concern being in the Iowa City area. I also did not like how there was not always a constant flow of work for me to do. It seems that some days I would have lots to do where others I was sent home early.
Advice
I would advise to seek out the advice of the head doctors as much as possible since there is much to be learned from them. I would also say to make sure to try and experience as much as possible in your time there. I was able to watch some amazing medical procedures such as MRI scans, evaluations, rounds throughout the hospital, and much more.

DIetary Clerk
April 2017 • Iowa City, IA
What I liked
I like that I'm the person who helps hundreds of patients a day order their food. Most of the time, they're on a specific diet specification that limits them on what they can eat, so I'm the person that they talk to; to get them the best possible meal.
What I wish was different
That I got this job right when I moved to Iowa City because it pays me well for a student job.
Advice
Never take what you're eating for granted. Most patients at the hospital are extremely limited in what they can eat everyday. Also, really try to eat healthy. Not only will see incredible benefits to your body, but it will help you live a longer life!

I wish I had more computer resources and a better work space.
Advice
Let the doctors handle the science parts while you handle the technical parts.
