I enjoyed how I was able to explore my interests in higher education and student affairs by working for an office (CDE) and department (TRIO) that I've never worked in before. The professional team members were very helpful and supportive of the other Teaching Assistants and me.
What I wish was different
Due to COVID-19, this year's summer programming was moved to a 100% virtual format. We were not able to be on campus with the TRIO students and partake in additional activities outside of the classroom curriculum. Despite these circumstances, we were still able to adapt and find new and creative ways to keep the students engaged during the 6-week summer program.
Advice
Creativity and being open! Creativity is important when deciding on activities to do for the time spent with the students before class has started, as well as the planned activities towards the end of each week. Keeping the students engaged is important as they want to get the most out of this experience. Being open with new ideas and going with the flow is key, especially in a new environment, such as virtual. If you enjoy working in a team-based environment where everyone collaborates on ideas with one another, this is the job for you!
