Cancer Center Research Intern

June - July 2019 • Honolulu, HI

What I liked

The internship offered many opportunities about the different types of cancers seen in the U.S. I was able to develop new skills in treat cancer cells with new compounds developed by the University of Hawaii.

What I wish was different

I wish that the program had a training program for those working in the lab prior to the start of the internship.

Advice

Use your free time to visit the many labs that are in the cancer center.

Research Experience for Undergraduates Intern

May - August 2019 • Hilo, HI

What I liked

I really enjoyed the freedom I had throughout this internship. I was able to conduct independent research on a meaningful topic. I also got to work in a new environment for free.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship was longer. If the internship was longer, I would have been able to conduct a much more significant research project.

Advice

I would like others to know that they shouldn't be afraid to step out of their comfort zone. My research project was on arthropods and I knew nothing about entomology going into the program. I ended up learning a lot about insects and bugs and gained a greater appreciation for critters.

REU Intern

June - August 2018 • Honolulu, HI

What I liked

This position taught me an unimaginable amount about independent research and how to carry out the scientific process. I was new to research in Geology, and got to work with so many experts in the field.

What I wish was different

I wish that the internship had been more structured with more personal check-ins along the way. Mentors seemed to have very different ideas and expectations. Each of the interns had very different experiences in this respect, some more positive than others. (on the upside, this is great prep for Graduate School and what you could experience there)

Advice

If you are currently working towards a career in the sciences, I could not recommend an REU opportunity more highly. This experience has opened so many doors for me, and I was able to explore Hawaii on a fully funded internship. The research that I completed, with the faculty that I was fortunate enough to work with, made for a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Just because the applications are competitive, don't sell yourself short - it IS possible to participate in an REU, even if you don't fit the requirements to a 'T'. Apply to 3-4 programs and make sure that you are TRULY interested in the research content, because potential advisors can tell when you just want to list another thing on your resume.
