I love working the rock wall and getting to instruct new climbers! As someone who made lots of friends on the rock wall staff as a new climber, this is an important part of the job for me.

What I wish was different

I wish I had applied freshman year instead of sophomore year!

Advice

Don’t be worried if you don’t have experience in everything outdoors! I didn’t have much experience in anything other than climbing coming into the position but I’ve learned so much since I started!

What I liked

This job allowed me to gain a lot of hands on experience that coincided with what I was learning in a lot of my marketing courses. I am able to meet a lot of people my age as well as work along with the professional staff in the offices. Facility Operations Supervisor/Lead Supervisor of Student Staffing

August 2017 • Dayton, OH

What I liked

I love the entire culture of UDCR, I have made some of my best friends here and both the students and pro-staff are so supportive and focused on developing you so that you can reach your personal goals. I have learned so much about myself as well as professionally that I never thought I would learn with a Campus Recreation Job. There is also a lot of opportunity to move up and have a lot of responsibility as a student that really prepares you for the real world in any job field. The best on-campus job I could have asked for.

What I wish was different

Facility Operations is the department where we swipe cards! It doesn't seem very clear in the job description, but if people are looking for the card swiper job at the front desk, Facility Operations Attendant is what you're looking for.

Advice

Get involved! There are so many opportunities like conferences, site visits, volunteering events, etc. That are really fun and beneficial, plus they help you make new friends and get closer with your staff and the staff in other departments.

What I wish was different

I wish rec employees had more events outside of work so people could get to know each other better.

Facility operation attendant

July 2018 • Dayton, OH

What I liked

This is my first internship of my life and I have enjoyed working at UD Recplex so far. Both my coworkers and supervisors are my mentor while guiding me to put everything in the right order and staying organized during my shift. I gained great lessons in customer services, answering the call and helping customer to find either the best membership or group fitness class to fit their need. Also, I really appreciate this opportunity to explore how the gym runs and improve my professional skills such as communication and microsoft office.

What I wish was different

English is not my 1st language and sometimes I would have hard time to communicate with customers via the phone. Asking someone for help is so important for me and I want to stay grateful for people who helped me and also recall everything I learned from the day and write down those process down a paper.

Advice

Keep a positive mindset and reflect on your daily shift once you back home.
