Cancer Research Fellow

May - August 2018 • Aurora, CO

What I liked

I really enjoyed gaining research experience. It was very interesting to be involved in cutting-edge research on cancer. I'm very glad I got the chance to see what research was like.

What I wish was different

I wish my project had worked out. The viruses we were going to use to transfect the cells did not grow, so I had to throw together a project in the last few weeks. I wish my PI was a bit more involved so she would know that my project wasn't working and could have changed it earlier.

Advice

Let your PI know if your project isn't working ASAP so you can switch to something else in time for the final presentation.

Summer Research Fellow

May - August 2018 • Aurora, CO

What I liked

I loved the opportunity to work with a professor one-on-one and assist him in his research. He was very gracious to me and always spent the time to teach me the methods useful to the lab. There were also lunch lectures twice a week to let the summer research fellows become more familiar with cancer topics and current trends in research. Those were very useful and interesting lectures, and I am so grateful to have been able to attend them.

What I wish was different

I did really enjoy the internship, though I wish that there was more time to socialize with and get to know the other interns.

Advice

In this internship, you will have to perform your own research relating to the work of the lab, which you can present on a poster later on in the summer and count as a professional presentation. Set up your personal research project early so that you have ample time to work on it!
