Through the UC SURF program, I learned a lot about biomedical research techniques through observation as well as hands-on work. I improved my overall laboratory skills and was able to more clearly define what I want for my future. I had networking opportunities as well the priviledge of assisting with life-saving research.
What I wish was different
I wish I had been able to spend more time in the lab. I could have completed a longer and more complex project with clearer statistics and conclusions.
Advice
Go out of your way to introduce yourself to those in the program with you. Become close with the head of your department/primary investigator. Not only will you learn more and have a better experience, you'll gain connections to individuals who might help you secure a job or position in graduate school.

What I liked
Co-workers were excellent, supervisors were friendly, understanding, and willing to help whenever necessary. I was given responsibilities of a full-time employee and trusted to do them correctly, and given feedback on what I did well and how I could improve.
