Research Intern

May 2018 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

It was exactly what I wanted to do in my neuroscience career. I also like how welcoming the staff is, and how willing they are to offer me career and academic advice.

What I wish was different

Advice

I didn't originally plan to be working at this school. I met the professor by emailing her to ask for career advice. I say it is always helpful to reach out, even without the expectation of a job. The worst you can get is a no response.

What I liked

I really liked being a part of one of the best immunological engineering labs in the US and seeing all the the creative and impressive research led by other lab members.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been given a personal project.

Advice

Make sure you come into the lab with a good biology background! These labs are pretty intense so be ready to feel pretty overwhelmed at points. Just know that you'll catch up eventually.

Public Health Researcher

June 2018 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

I loved the team I worked with. Ci3 has an amazing work environment, and everyone was very welcoming and really helpful and kind to me. I also enjoyed learning everything I did here. I never had any experience working in public health, so this opportunity allowed me to develop a lot of skills that I wouldn't have had the chance to elsewhere. The projects that are going on at Ci3 are innovative but also community based, and truly integrate a wide variety of voices and strategies to find good solutions in healthcare.

What I wish was different

I don't have anything that I would have changed.

Advice

I think it was really important that I was really present in our design office space and that I really wanted to be included in the team and tried very hard to do so.

Mellon Mays Undergraduate Research Fellow

June - August 2018 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

I enjoy the rigor of the program. Each week I made progress with developing my independent research project and I had graduate mentors to assist me the entire time.

What I wish was different

I wish the program gave fellows the opportunity to meet faculty in the department to ask questions about graduate school and developing their research project further.

Advice

This program is extremely challenging academically and emotionally. Because you will be living with, going to classes with, and spending free time with other fellows, it may seem like an insular community, however, making connections with other fellows will have lifelong benefits.

UChicago Admissions Student Ambassador

July - August 2018 • New Delhi, Delhi

What I liked

I had a truly amazing eight-week summer experience at the UChicago Center in Delhi. It was personally enriching to meet prospective students with their parents and talk about my UChicago experience with them as an Admissions Student Ambassador. However, that is not the whole story; it was equally great to be involved in the daily activities of the Center too: designing and advertising materials for their events, working together with the EPIC-India, IIC and TCD teams at the Center, and networking with UChicago alumni, faculties, students and Indian scholars as well. On top of that, I seized the opportunity to explore India and document its vibrant culture through photography.

What I wish was different

Advice

My advice would be to be prepared to experience and enjoy the city of New Delhi - the buzzing city life, its peculiar sounds and smells, its rich cuisine, etc.
