Undergraduate Researcher

What I liked
My research advisor is an incredible person and boss. Not only is he incredibly talented in his cutting-edge field, but he also strives to make sure that his students are on the right track towards success. He cares more about how his students are doing and their future than about pressing results out of them, and that culture shows in the success of his lab. By far the best experience I got out of UCF.
What I wish was different
Nothing.

Undergraduate Research Assistant
March 2018 • Orlando, FL
What I liked
Gave a lot of industry insight while still being able to take courses and focus on School. Allowed me to apply course concepts and witness how they are applied. Opened up a lot of networking events due to national conferences and industry visitors.
What I wish was different
A more guided process into 'how to get involved in research'.
Advice
You get what you give. If you show up an hour a week your experience will reflect that.

Aerospace Engineering Intern
May - August 2019 • Orlando, FL
What I liked
Beautiful location, well maintained labs performing a variety of interesting and engaging research.
What I wish was different
Campus was a little big and travel expenses were pricey.
Advice
If you have to live in a shared apartment for an internship, invest in some sort of grocery service. Eating out as an excuse to not have to deal with your flatmates gets expensive.

Event services associate
November 2018 • Orlando, FL
What I liked
I liked that the job had me up and moving around, but that there were plenty of time each shift to sit in the break room and hang out.
What I wish was different
The communication between the managers and the workers. Sometimes the managers did not understand how difficult our tasks can be.
The issue of understaffing a particularly laborious shift and then over staffing and a very easy shift.
Advice
Try to be positive when there are laborious shifts so you don’t get in a bad mood.

UCF/Lockheed Martin CWEP
March 2017 • Orlando, FL
What I liked
A large company with plenty of opportunities and great pay for a student worker. I found a job doing exactly what I tailored my resume for when I applied to the CWEP pool through career services.
What I wish was different
I wish there were more training opportunities. It's a long commute from UCF. I think there should be more flexibility in work schedule and location.
Advice
Look for a group that suits your interests. It's a huge company with a large presence in Orlando. If the first group you join doesn't do what you want to do, there are plenty of other opportunities in the company. There's functional and program management you can approach to changing your role/ responsibilities. This experience helped me find a career path and a great job post-graduation.

Undergraduate Researcher
May 2018 • Orlando, FL
What I liked
I enjoyed the opportunity to learn from knowledgable PhD students and apply deep learning concepts learned in class in a real-world application.
What I wish was different
I wish there was more time to be able to continue the research during this Summer. Now that Fall is ramped up to full speed, it is difficult to find time to dedicate to the project.
Advice
I would highly recommend any undergraduate student find a research opportunity. Definitely start early and often and don't be afraid to ask questions! You're still in undergrad!

Psychologist Research Assistant
May 2018 • Orlando, FL
What I liked
The people that you meet and the exposure to the research allows you to grow as an individual. Personally I am looking to get my PhD, so this experience has been nothing but positive for me and my journey.
What I wish was different
Nothing! There are bumps of course because nothing is perfect but those detours illistrate the true nature of research and the life of a graduate student.
Advice
I would definitely say that you need to get involved, do not just run participants! You need to get involved with the research and try to make your mark on the lab and on research papers coming out of the lab.
