Advice

Definitely take the risk and try something new. This was something completely out of my comfort zone since I wasn't really familiar with coding but after going through this program, I was able to learn so much and meet great people!

Research Intern

May - August 2021 • Tucson, AZ

What I liked

I really enjoyed my experience as a summer undergraduate research intern at the U of A. I enjoyed my experience so much that I decided to stay in my research lab as a volunteer into the fall semester. The most enjoyable part of the experience was the exposure to the field of research and the ability to be part of several research projects, including an authorship. This was my first experience with research and the team I was a part of was available for any questions I had and they allowed me the opportunity to gain extra research trainings as well. I feel as though this experience provided me with a basic understanding of the field of research as well as applicable skills that can be used throughout my educational and career paths. I'm very thankful that I was able to have this experience and gain exposure to research, collaborate on projects with other interns and participate in team meetings and projects with the entire research team. Without this experience I wouldn't have been able to gain exposure to research and solidify my interest in the field. I've now been able to use this experience to open doors to other research related opportunities I'm currently a part of.

What I wish was different

My only wish for what could have been different was the level of my involvement. Although I was required to put in 6 hours/week and worked on numerous projects, I wish that I had the time to investigate personal research questions with the PI. This was not the fault of the program or team that I was apart of but rather the amount of personal time I had available. I was taking multiple summer courses concurrently with my internship so I didn't have excess free-time in which I could've utilized to dive deeper into personal research questions.

Advice

I would highly recommend communicating with the research team as must as possible to ask personal questions and to build relationships as well. The research team is available to help you reach your desired goals and get the experiences you're looking for. The experience is highly individualized base on your specific goals and you should take advantage of the opportunities provided.
