Telecommunications Engineer Internship

November 2019 • Omaha, NE

What I liked

In this position I am able to use Python, SQL, and other programming languages to complete my tasks. Some movies depict interns being an errand runner, delivering coffee and the like. At Union Pacific, interns are provided with legitimate work projects to complete.

Operations Management Intern

June - September 2019 • Roseville, CA

What I liked

The mix of office and field work, as well as the ability to work on both short and long-term projects. The short-term projects provided great exposure to the different operations of the railroad, while the long-term projects allowed me to see the impact of the management team's work over time. Being responsible for my own projects

What I wish was different

I would occasionally run out of work to do, but it was very well organized otherwise.

Advice

Don't be afraid to branch out and try new things. If I expressed an interest in learning about something, a real effort was made to help me achieve that. Every time I toured a mechanical shop or rode on a train, people were always happy to take time out of their day to explain their work to me. The people at Union Pacific know that an internship is a is a learning opportunity and strive to balance day-to-day work with opportunities for professional growth.

IT intern

June - September 2019 • Council Bluffs, IA

What I liked

The people who work there were all reall nice and it was a good work environment. The work wasn’t too tough and I legitimately looked forward to work each day.

What I wish was different

The facility had almost no windows and the lack of natural light was very noticeable some days. Also some days I would run out of work very quickly and have nothing to do for a few hours.

Advice

Double check what you are doing before you take a job. I came in looking for a software engineering job, and although I was eventually offered one I feel I wouldn’t have been if I wasn’t leaving the job for other reasons at the time. I still really enjoyed the work, but I didn’t learn a ton that will be applicable to my future careers.

Structures Design Year round Intern

May 2017 - August 2019 • Omaha, NE

What I liked

my team was great and gave me loads for experiance in engineering, corporate work, and railroad operations, as well as construction observation.

What I wish was different

The people in charge of the engineering internship were not very helpful when working outside of the summer as far as micromanaging and not willing to work with a flexible schedule. Push back was constant. Also, over the span of my internship I experienced multiple major layoffs which were handled poorly. This showed a lack of knowing your employees at a lower level. To be clear I think very highly of my boss and team. However I do not think very highly of my HR and internship cooridinators.

Advice

A good boss makes a world of difference and a good team that fostered your learning experience is key to a successful work environment.
