UNCW Campus Life

Office Assistant

August 2019 - May 2021 • Wilmington, NC

What I liked

The work environment in Campus Life is unlike any one I have ever experienced before, in all the best ways. As a Campus Life student employee, I have never felt unseen, unappreciated, unheard, or unvalued, and I believe that is because of the incredible professional staff within Campus Life. I am so appreciative of each of the relationships that I have been able to form with the professional staff that I work with, as well as the personal and professional growth that I have experienced through my position.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had started this job earlier. I began this job at the very beginning of my Junior year, and I have loved it ever since. If you have the time in your schedule, you should 100% apply to work here as soon as you can.

Advice

Don't be too worried about making the schedule fit with your school work and classes. Obviously don't overcommit yourself, but I can assure you that your bosses and supervisors will always put your academics first, and they will be respectful of your commitment to school. Being a student employee will increase your time management skills to an incredible degree, which will be very beneficial later in life -- so learn now while your employers are supportive!

What I liked

I liked the flexibility of scheduling and the weekly meetings that allowed me to interact with my team and professional staff! The position was very fun, low-stress, and high reward. I also loved how my job connected to both my studies and my career goals - the professional staff did a wonderful job of teaching me professional development skills and ways to communicate my strengths in interviews. Campus Life is a wonderful division and the Arts & Programs department is a wonderful environment to grow professionally and personally.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have worked this position over the summer because I loved completing my weekly tasks! This position can only be worked during the spring and fall semesters, but there are opportunities to continue employment for multiple years if you receive positive performance evaluations (which almost everyone does, because it's such a great environment there).

Advice

Go into this opportunity with an open mind and a desire to learn. The staff is incredibly competent in training & development, and they will give you all the tools you need to succeed. The CL division and Arts & Programs department are like a family - they are warm & welcoming, so get excited to make lifelong relationships!

What I liked

Great people, from the other student workers to the professional staff overseeing us. Lots of chances to work a good amount of hours. Before covid, there were a lot of weekend and evening shifts available. There's opportunity to move up and do more technical stuff if you want. Otherwise, you can just stack chairs and set up tables and stuff which is pretty easy and low stress. The pro staff really go our of their way to teach you about audio and visual tech so you can put in on your resume or even pursue the field after college.

What I wish was different

I wish off campus students could have parking passes because the shifts can go really late at night and I don't feel safe walking home past midnight. The pay also isnt great, but thats made up for by how flexible the hours are and how theyll make sure it works with school and club schedules.

Advice

If you want to move up in the ranks and do lots of tech stuff, be straight up about it so you can get on track quickly. If you wait too long, you may not have time. Also always make sure the chair stacks are perfectly aligned or they'll fall!

What I liked

I love the welcoming atmosphere of Campus Life. I felt comfortable and friendly around all of the staff, even my supervisors. We get work done but its low stress with a nice atmosphere. Campus Life is also very flexible schedule-wise, and really works with you to make sure there's no conflicts with your academics. Campus Life also goes out of their way to assist you with professional development as part of your position, something that is only done to benefit you.

What I wish was different

Campus Life as a whole is lacking a bit in the salary department, but the relaxed atmosphere, convenience, and schedule flexibility makes up for it in the end.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask for help, especially if its for professional development. Everyone is super supportive and wants to see you do your best, even after you graduate.

What I liked

Everyone who works in Campus Life is extremely positive and supportive. Student employees are highly valued by the department, and professional staff are very intentional about forming relationships with student employees and providing mentorship and support. They also go out of their way to find ways to incorporate students' academic work with their job and give student staff experiences that will benefit them in their career post graduation. There are also opportunities for paid internships for course credit. The department did a great job accommodating staff members during the pandemic to keep everyone safe while still making sure that those who wanted hours were getting hours. There is overall a great community among all Campus Life staff members, both student staff and professional staff. I feel like everyone I work with believes in me and wants the best for me.

What I wish was different

I had a great experience working for Campus Life. My only regret is that I didn't apply for a position with them sooner.

Advice

The experience is what you make of it. All the staff supervisors want the best for the students and will help you make your experience amazing. If there's a new skill you want to learn, ask. If there's something you think could be better on your staff, present your ideas to them. They are all about professional development and creating opportunities for you to build your skills and resume, so don't be afraid to create those opportunities for yourself!
