I loved the resources the internship provided to prepare the students for graduate school. I also loved getting to read cases and learn more about genetics. Lastly, I loved getting to talk to professionals in the genetics field.
What I wish was different
I wish the internship was in person, but it was not due to corona virus.
Advice
My advice would be to record some of the talks and conversations if allowed, because they always provide great information.

Mindfulness Study Researcher
May 2020 • Chapel Hill, NC
What I liked
It was an amazing, close-knit team of four researchers that cared about the well-being of teens. I liked the meeting schedule (once a week Friday morning), the straightforwardness of the project, and support of the group.
What I wish was different
I wish it were a compensated position, though that was impossible as an unfunded research project.
Advice
I would say that this experience demonstrated the power of network to advance one’s career. The UNC-Chapel hill professors are very kind and willing to help you grow as a researcher.

Cardiac/Vascular Sonographer
July 2019 • Chapel Hill, NC
What I liked
Love the research triangle area and the people I work with. I love the experience gained from working at a teaching hospital and my CI has been an amazing teacher.
What I wish was different
I could have been sent somewhere for my internship even slightly closer to home (California), not for me, but so my daughter could be closer to family.
Advice
I believe the most growth a person can gain comes from being uncomfortable, and going far from home is uncomfortable, so if your about to go on internship keep your mind open to going to where youll learn the most and get the most out of your education versus what feels the most comfortable to you.

Carolina Summer Fellow
May - July 2019 • Chapel Hill, NC
What I liked
I got incredible hands-on research experience. I also really like UNC Chapel Hill and the open research environment that they offered.
What I wish was different
I wish that I had gotten a little bit more time to wrap up my results, but due to the fact that it's a summer program, the research is a little bit rushed.
Advice
Be open to new experiences and work hard! The internship is as rewarding as the work that you put in.
