What I wish was different

It was my very first internship so I had no references coming into the internship. I thought that everything was very well organized, structured and I learned a lot from it.

Advice

One of my biggest advice for anyone working on anything whether that is an internship or a job, you need to show up and do your job with the right attitude always.

What I liked

I gained a lot of experience while at UNAIDS. This ranged from general knowledge of American government, and domestic and global health policies to using Excel and condensing information to create brochures that were used on Capitol Hill. I was the only intern in the office, which was relatively small, so I got to learn a lot about and from my superiors regarding business etiquette and life as a whole.

What I wish was different

I wish that my position had been more defined. There were general tasks that I was given throughout my internship however, there were moments when I had no true direction as to what I should be doing, or I had nothing assigned to me. I also wish that I had housing in the city, as I commuted three + hours and spent upwards of $20 on transportation.

Advice

Never stop being curious. There are a multitude of situations around the world and so many different players that go into granting foreign aid. You'll think that you know all there is to know about the issue, but then something new will come up that you have to research and become an expert on. Don't take any of it for granted, because all experiences and opportunities are rewarding if you make them.
