UC Davis Health System

VMTH

June - September 2019 • Davis, CA

What I liked

Learning about the vet experience was amazing, especially because I had never shadowed a vet prior to this, and doing so at the VMTH was a great experience. There was a lot of unfamiliar equipment that I had to learn about, but the technicians were very helpful in teaching me. I also saw a lot of different types of dogs and cats with different conditions and learning about treating those were interesting as well.

What I wish was different

I wish I received a tour of some sort to be informed about where everything was, from medical equipment to clinics, because I had some trouble in figuring it out sometimes. It wasn't difficult to figure out, but I wish I knew where everything was already so I could have been faster in helping and more efficient with my work experience.

Advice

Know where everything is prior to working because it will help, and try to follow the vet students from start to finish each appointment.

Junior Specilait

June 2018 • Sacramento, CA

What I liked

The ability to participate in multiple research projects. I also learned about the grant writing and RIB process.

What I wish was different

Working in a lab requires social skills and communication. When communication is broken it can lead to mistakes and issues. As a lab member I learned the importance of communication and how it can be improved.

Advice

Be a team player but also remember to get your individual tasks done first before offering to help others.

Volunteer

June - September 2019 • Sacramento, CA

What I liked

I love being in a working environment that revolved around Physical Therapy because it is the career that I am looking into for my future. I also enjoyed interacting with the PTs and PTAs and getting to know them more as the weeks progressed.

What I wish was different

I wish that I asked more question and had been less shy while the PTs and PTAs were doing their work.

Advice

Make most of your time in the workplace; Be willing to ask questions and do the small things that they appreciate you to do because they are also very busy.
