UC Davis Genome Center

Undergraduate Researcher

June 2019 • Davis, CA

What I liked

Super awesome to get hands-on experience, they know you're a student (so you're still learning) and are totally understanding when you make mistakes or ask for help. Works around your school schedule. Really cool group of people (networking!) that you don't work under, but you still see them and interact with them sometimes. You are able to know graduate students and have more fun in office hours with professors, since the researchers at UC Davis are so tied together within a field. Ties together your academics/college courses and gives you more context (sometimes an upper edge) in your classes.

What I wish was different

Nothing!

Advice

Be ready to learn on the spot, and don't be afraid to ask for context of what you do in the wet lab. Use this opportunity to tie together your academic knowledge and what you've been doing in your lab.

Lab Assistant

February - August 2018 • Davis, CA

What I liked

The experience I gained and the opportunity because I was a Freshman and didn’t think I would get hired. That was my very first job and the staff and researcher made it very welcoming for me.

What I wish was different

I wish I had stayed longer and did more lab work, but for the brief time, I enjoyed what I did and found it very useful for the rest of my time at UC Davis.

Advice

If you have time on your hands, definitely try and come in and work more because they really need help. Even if you’re just working the minimum amount of required hours, it’d be nice if you could allocate more time to the job because in the end, it is a research position and they need all the help they can get.
