College Intern - Inspector General Criminal Investigator Academy
May - August 2017 • Glynco, GA
What I liked
There are many opportunities to network with law enforcement professionals in the field (staff, students, etc.). There are also endless opportunities to learn about federal law enforcement by auditing classes. Everyone was willing to answer any questions we had and give us advice for our future careers. This internship also gives you the freedom to make your own schedule, pick things that interest you, but also try new things to see what you like and what you don't like.
What I wish was different
Official acceptance into the program was done last minute and didn't leave much time for preparing or traveling. The internship coordinator is very hands-off and you are expected to figure out a lot on your own.
Advice
Start the application process early. Don't give up if you don't get on the first try, the selection process is highly competitive and they have a very limited number of openings. Don't let it being unpaid and far from home scare you; it was scary for me at first, but this is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Be sure to make a decision you won't regret.
