U.S. Air Force

Law Enforcement Spcl. Military Working Dog Qual.

May 1988 • San Antonio, TX

What I liked

I was on Anderson AFB, Guam and Kelly AFB, TX. as a member of the Security Police. Got a chance to take Computer Science classes. Working with the MWDs.

What I wish was different

I wish I had put the job I wanted on the contract I signed. Do not go in open general unless you want to be placed in a job that no one wants. They just give the badge and security clearance to anyone who makes it through the training - one of our own guys killed some base employees and ran off with the money from a funds escort. Crazy shift work - 9 day weeks. When I got back to the states from Guam, they did not allow me to take college classes. Promotions are hard to get. 12 hour shifts are terrible. My life was threatened by a TSgt. at Kelly AFB. During training we were taught to save one round (bullet) to commit suicide if we were captured. I was ordered to stay away from an air craft with the word, "Evergreen" on the side while searching for drugs at Kelly AFB. Later, the FBI raided the base and they found drug trafficking and those "Timothy McVeigh" people there.

Advice

The benefits are real and fantastic. However, I would avoid the Air Force. If you do want to join it then wait until after the U.S. Congress declares war first.
