Turner Construction Company

Estimating engineer

May - August 2019 • Cleveland, OH

What I liked

The best company I've ever worked for. They deeply care about their employees and it shows.

What I wish was different

I wish I hadn't lived so far from the main office in downtown Cleveland, which made the daily commute long.

Advice

Don't be afraid to explore employment opportunities that are slightly out of your major. There are more jobs out there than you think and you might find one that you like better than the typical job for your major.

Estimating Intern

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I really liked how Turner gave me a construction knowledge-based foundation. They had many learning resources which I could access at any time. When I had some downtime I would go on the learning center to learn more about whatever commodity I wanted to study such as HVAC, plumbing, or electrical works.

What I wish was different

I wish they had a better system to connect all the other interns. I also wish that they had a different way of introducing the interns to the team rather than just throwing them into the office. It would have been nice to have a meet and greet with the managers and the other interns in the office.

Advice

I would go into this job ready to learn a lot. Especially in the construction field. If you are not civil, then it is a little different than what you learn in school. Things are less theoretical and more on the business side of life.

Field engineer

June - August 2018 • Albany, NY

What I liked

This job was extremely involved. The company does a great job getting you the resources and the help to be an asset to their team.

What I wish was different

I wish I got more experience in creating design or at least being a part of that process. However, it’s a field job, so field experience was the most important.

Advice

Ask contractors and laborers questions. They might be the lowest on the totem pole in the tree of responsibility, but many of them have been doing this for decades and they are very good at what they do, and will help you gain practical knowledge that a lot of engineers lack.

Construction Superintendent Intern

May - August 2019 • Omaha, NE

What I liked

I really enjoyed my team as well as the responsibility I was given throughout my time there. I was able to take on many different roles and experience different parts of the industry.

What I wish was different

I liked Omaha but I would’ve also liked to try a bigger city location.

Advice

Definitely don’t go in acting like you know everything. Many of the guys on site have years more experience than you do so soak up as much knowledge from everyone there.

Engineering Assistant

June - September 2019 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

I loved the environment and my coworkers. Everyone was friendly and easygoing. It was easy to fit in and I learned so much in the short period of time.

What I wish was different

I wish that there had been a better system for the interns to connect with the higher ups in the company. I managed to set up those meetings myself but it would have been nice to have that already organized as well.

Advice

I would say to not be afraid to ask questions. Everyone was very willing to help and guide you through anything. Don't worry about admitting what you don't know.

Marketing Intern

June 2018 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

I liked that I got the chance to learn about the business behind the construction industry as it was never my intention to get involved in construction. I was a key factor in the RFP drafting process and I was happy I got the chance to learn the ins and outs of attacking a proposal and how to push it towards eventual completion.

What I wish was different

I wish I would've had a chance to work on the social media & digital marketing to boost Turner's brand online. Instead, my day-to-day role consisted of drafting RFPs, assisting with internal marketing communications, and coordinating Turner events.

Advice

Don't limit yourself only to opportunities that seem appealing to you. This internship was a great example of a golden opportunity that I stumbled upon. I never intended to be a marketing intern at a construction company, but I have learned a lot. At the end of the day, it is still valuable professional work experience that will ultimately help boost your resume.

Project Engineer Intern

June - August 2018 • Livermore, CA

What I liked

I loved the team I worked with, they were all very welcoming and helpful. The information I learned has direct applications to what I would be doing post graduation so that was very rewarding for me to learn.

What I wish was different

The only thing I wish had been differnent was the pace that they taught me at. I wish it was slightly more face paced in the beginning, but it was understandable why it wasn't.

Advice

Always ask questions.
