TURN Community Services, Inc.

Direct Support Professional

January 2018 - October 2020 • Cedar City, UT

What I liked

I loved my job at TURN! They are so flexible with student schedules. I was a sub, so I got the opportunity to work with all the clients and choose my own schedule! This was such a great job for me! The management was great and the clients are so fun. I often relished in the fact that I got paid to do the things I was doing because a lot of the time, it was really fun stuff!

What I wish was different

For a while, I did work in one program and for me that didn't work so I switched to being a sub.

Advice

Find the program that works for you. Also, this is a good job for people who like to make a little difference and are willing to work and not just sit around. There will be times when you are chilling but coworkers will like you a lot more if you do your part and keep up with the things that need to be done. But again, I loved this job!

What I liked

I loved the clients. They are amazing individuals to work with. I enjoyed building repoir with them and working on their personal goals. It was so fulfilling to see my clients slowly step out of their comfort zone and become more outgoing, open to new activities, more productive, etc.

What I wish was different

I wish I had paid more attention to the initial training before working. There was a lot of training, and being new it blew all over my head, but once working with the clients I wish I retained it better to provide better support for them. I wish I had easy access to that training to revisit.

Advice

Don’t take on this job if you’re not willing to really engage with the clients. I saw coworkers who didn’t really want to be there who had a negative impact on their clients since they didn’t invest in working with the clients on their personal goals, sometimes not even helping with basic essential needs. It can be a tiring experience, I certainly got worn out sometimes. But if you truly care about the clients and put in the effort to really care for them it makes it all worth it.

What I liked

I LOVE TURN!!! Just like any job where you work with people, it can be difficult. But it so rewarding. When a client grasps a concept they have been working on, the light in their eyes and the smiles are worth it. We all have challenges, the clients may have more than most. But being able to help them and getting to feel the love they have to share is incredible. I love my job and plan to stay here for many years!

What I wish was different

I wish I had been confident in asking for help while I was training. There is a lot to learn and it takes several months to feel completely comfortable. That process would have been easier on me, my clients, and my coworkers if I had asked questions.

Advice

COMMUNICATE! It can get crazy. There are a lot of people to serve. Be patient with yourself and with the process. Talk to your coordinators. They have a lot on their plates but they want you to help you excel in the job. Every issue is solvable if you just talk about it!

What I liked

I love the clients, and I love all the experience it gave me.

What I wish was different

I wish I would’ve worked less often so as not to get burned out. It decreases my productivity.

Advice

This experience is good if you can be open-minded and love a good challenge. It isn’t for everyone.
