What I liked

I like that it is asynchronous as I am able to fit it into my schedule little by little whenever I have time. This type of job helps me with managing my time, and as transportation time does not need to be built in, as I can do it wherever without having to section out times for shuttles.

What I wish was different

Advice

I would say that if something catches your interest, do not be scared to apply because you may end up being very involved in the opportunity and enjoying your time there.

What I liked

I had an exciting experience working on my research, and after my summer experience, I have continued working on my research into the school year. The opportunity to formulate a hypothesis, conduct an experiment, and analyze the results was so exciting, and I know I will use these skills in my future career.

What I wish was different

Nothing, I truly loved my experience.

Advice

I think the best advice for those who wish to engage in research is to seek out a faculty member or department you have real interest in because it is so much more exciting and productive to be working on a project that you have a passion for! I am so glad I chose the department I work in!

What I liked

I got to live in New Orleans for free. I was paid to do research in an area I love in a city that I grew to love. I worked very closely with the graduate students in my lab and got to know a lot about the graduate application process.

What I wish was different

I wish that I would've had more time to spend with the principal investigator of the lab in which I worked. He was very busy attending conferences etc throughout the whole summer, and I only really saw him two or three times.

Advice

Try to get out of your comfort zone over the summers! I was really apprehensive about living in New Orleans on my own for the summer, but it was life-changing and allowed me to become more independent, confident and passionate about research science in general.

What I liked

I really liked being able to work in the lab completely alone and independently; I also appreciated dictating most of my own hours.

What I wish was different

Other than possibly being more compensated for my work, nothing.

Advice

I would highly advise undergraduates to reach out to their professors and collaborate with them on any research projects they may be working on. It is great experience and teaches the importance of self-motivation, as well as establishes an important personal and professional connection.
