Child Specialist Intern

May - August 2021 • Maplewood, MN

What I liked

I really enjoyed the environment and the community. It was very inviting and welcoming to interns, staff, and clients. The children and parents I worked with were very interested in what I do and the support I offered as a Child Specialist Intern and as an individual. It was such an amazing and eye-opening experience as an aspiring Social Worker.

What I wish was different

I wish I was able to meet more children and families but due to the continuous pandemic and various sicknesses in the shelter, it was difficult to come in contact and really connect with the families and the children to offer support and services.

Advice

It is a great learning experience to work with families, children, and women who have experienced domestic violence or abuse of some sort, and working with a trauma-informed practice was new and a growth process for me. The environment of the shelter and the team helped me become more aware of what is needed for the clients and families so the support as an intern is evident.

What I liked

I loved coming in each day and seeing the smiles on the kids faces when we would tell them where we were going or what activity we were going to do that day.

What I wish was different

That it was a paid internship.

Advice

If you love to see a smile on a child’s face, then this is the experience for you.
