Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District

Children's sports instructor

May - August 2022 • Beaverton, OR

What I liked

Working with kids, some super fun coworkers

What I wish was different

Management was rather disorganized, what classes covered was not standardized, some coworkers were INCREDIBLY flaky with zero repercussions

Advice

It was an okay job to have for a few months, but by the end I was extremely fed up with it all-around. So yeah, work full-time seasonally, not part-time year-round.

Lifeguard and Swim Instructor

December 2015 • Beaverton, OR

What I liked

The hour flexibility and willingness for supervisors to work with their primarily young employee base to make schedules that work best for them.

What I wish was different

Better selection of new hires. Some new hires were simply not equipped or ready to tackle the job.

Advice

Be adaptable and try to have fun with your coworkers. Working at the pools becomes so much more engaging when you enjoy the people you are working with.

Camp Counselor

June - August 2019 • Beaverton, OR

What I liked

The pay was very good and the boss was willing to hear our feedback and make us feel like our voice was being heard. We did a wide variety of sports activities and the nature aspects were really awesome.

What I wish was different

The camp in itself was pretty disorganized and lead to a stressful and exhausting work environment. Kids are a lot of energy!

Advice

If you love chaos, this is a great place to work! I also would look into how to manage bullying because the bullying between children was extreme.

Front Desk Receptionist

January 2018 • Beaverton, OR

What I liked

I was able to see how the coordinators ran their individual programs and, at times, was able to aid them in different projects, experiencing for myself how it is run. I also was able to contribute through assisting the coordinators by suggesting different approaches to their programs. I felt that I was encouraged to do so, which was amazing.

What I wish was different

I do wish I had been more recognized for my work ethic and dedication. At times, it didn't feel that way.

Advice

Seek out more opportunities to assist someone who is leading or coordinating a large program. These chances may not reach you unless you actively look for them.

Swim Instructor

April 2015 - August 2018 • Beaverton, OR

What I liked

Working with children teaching them how to swim and helping them improve their skills.

What I wish was different

Management in the past was not good, but the location head got replaced this past summer and the new manager was a lot better.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask, it's worse to mess up and try to hide the damage than to ask someone to show you how to do something.

The staff, working environment, and different positions as both a secretary for the tennis center and tennis instructor for children.

I wish I had the opportunity to work there longer.

Advice

If you enjoy tennis and working with children, this is an incredible working environment.
