TrueNorth Companies

IT Systems Analyst

May 2022 • Cedar Rapids, IA

What I liked

Some of my favorite aspects of the opportunity at TrueNorth was the wide array of skills I got to learn and different projects I was exposed to. It was also a very rewarding feeling seeing the work that I was doing being put into production and used company wide.

What I wish was different

I learned quickly, but TrueNorth is a forge your own path kind of company. So at the beginning of my experience it take sometime to really get rolling because I was unaware of the culture here. I wish I had known this going in because it means I would have had more time to work on projects and interact with colleagues.

Advice

That TrueNorth takes phenomenal care of their employees and truly makes everyone feel valued and special.

Transportation Service Intern

What I liked

I really enjoyed the independency of the internship. We were given authority to set up our own meetings, attend meetings in our departments, and gain knowledge as we wished about the insurance industry. There are so many career opportunities for different majors related to math, computer science, and business at this company so everyone can flourish with their own personal skills. The community at TrueNorth is very kind and all the colleagues and leaders are helpful, knowledgable, and engaging.

What I wish was different

I would not change anything about my experience with my internship at TrueNorth.

Advice

I would recommend that future interns spend as much time job shadowing and talking to different leads of different departments as possible. It is great to see what different opportunities are out there in the company to find a best future career fit.

Business Development Intern

What I liked

TrueNorth has a fantastic internship program. There are so many opportunities to learn, and everybody at the company wants to help you grow as a professional.

What I wish was different

Advice

Actively seek out opportunities to network and prove your worth within the company. The entire internship is one long interview, so any accomplishment you make within your division or the intern project will be noticed by more people than you realize. Also, if you ask to go to lunch with somebody there is a good chance they'll say yes. A handful of interns in my class even went to individual lunch outings with the CEO, CFO, and President of the company!

What I liked

Advice

I would say that interns need to be ready to learn, learn, learn. Especially in the insurance world, there are a lot of moving pieces so I'd suggest coming in with an open mind and your learning hat on!
