Camp Nurse Assistant

June - August 2019 • Annandale, MN

What I liked

The experience was life changing. I learned so much about myself and the population I worked with throughout the summer. It taught me about patience, hard-work, time management, teamwork, and caring.

What I wish was different

Somewhat more extensive training for all the CNAs. My nursing education prepared me the most but some people had not received this.

Advice

There are some days that you will feel defeated and question why you do this kind of work. However, when you realize the difference you are making in so many lives it is 100% worth it.

Cabin Couselor

June - August 2018 • Eden Prairie, MN

What I liked

I loved every aspect of my job! This was my first time in the community of individuals with disabilities, and I was proven over and over again how smart, outgoing, and capable all of these individuals were. I was also able to work with a staff that were all patient, supportive, and caring. I was in an environment that allowed me to learn what it was like to work with others that were different than myself.

What I wish was different

I wish that I would have taken more time to rest when I could have. This internship requires a lot of patience and dedication to the job, and the times that you have to rest and be by yourself is important.

Advice

Be patient with yourself and others around you. If you haven't worked with this community before, then you will be learning a lot of new skills on how to communicate and how to meet your campers needs. Be patient with yourself because you will still be learning and everyone you interact with is different. Also be patient with your campers and your staff, because most likely they're still learning too.

Camp Nursing Assistant

June 2018 • Lake George Township, MN

What I liked

I worked at camp for people of all ages with varying disabilities. It was so eye opening to work with these individuals and provide them the classic experiences of a summer camp while accommodating their abilities. I loved the people that I worked with; we all shared a passion of helping others. This experience was absolutely unforgettable and I am so glad I got the chance to work at this camp.

What I wish was different

While the experience was amazing, the pay was difficult. I worked 15-18 hour days, 6 days out of the week, and was paid very very little. However, I did not have to pay rent or for groceries as the camp provides these, so it was not absolutely horrible.

Advice

A piece of advice I would give would be to go into the experience with an open heart and mind, and to be ready for your life to change.
