Tutor

May - June 2020 • Tucson, AZ

What I liked

Able to mentor high school students through summer courses, help with financial aid and college application processes for high school students that come from a first generation and low income family as I was once in their position as well

What I wish was different

I wish the job was able to be performed in person. Due to covid-19, schools were shut down and students and tutors were not able to meet in person.

Advice

It’s amazing how you can learn so much about college and pass on the tips and tricks to high school students that you can relate to as you both came from a low income family and being a first generation student.

Residential Advisor

June - August 2018 • Boston, MA

What I liked

I loved that I was able to implement my experience and takeaways from my prior internship effortlessly into this one, even though it was a different setting that I had to adapt to gradually. Upward Bound UMass TriO program allowed me to create sustainable relationships with both students and staff in a meaningful way, which helps builds the culture capital I am acquiring continuously for future references and my personal journey. I also enjoyed how I got to intimately teach in a small group setting to my kids via a workshop I facilitated called "Hip Hop in the Heartland." This assisted me in growing professionally in establishing boundaries between interpersonal relationships in the classroom, managing the space through a collective agreement on rules, and understanding my power as a mentor and educator. It was also beneficial because the staff chemistry inside and outside of our duties was exceptional with minimal drama.

What I wish was different

I wish the program allowed for the location of the organization to be more immersed in the city so there would be more activities for the kids over the weekend for them to become more productive in the city but I also see value in placing them outside of the city atmosphere so they can get out of their comfort zone.

Advice

You are the students' mentor first and then a friend. Prior to them sharing a personal experience with you, explicitly make it clear to them that you are mandated reporter so boundaries are clear.
