Trimble, Inc.

Software Engineer Intern

May - August 2023 • Sunrise, FL

What I liked

I got to work on the same tasks as the rest of my team which made me feel like I was truly contributing to the team's success. I was encouraged to ask questions and seek help from all of my team members to improve my knowledge and to get to know them. We had plenty of activities to meet other interns and become familiar with the company. I felt that everyday I learned something new whether it was about programming in C#, using XPaths, automating tests, or in general good coding practices.

What I wish was different

My internship was a hybrid one which was pretty cool, my only complaint about that is that I didn't get to meet all the other interns as they were in Colorado.

Advice

Be very open to asking questions and seeking help. Working with others can help you figure out what you are stuck on just by explaining the problem to them. It's better to ask questions rather than getting stuck in a problem for a few hours that could've easily been resolved by simply asking. Don't let perfection be the enemy of progress.

Technical Documentation Design Intern

June - September 2021 • Portland, OR

What I liked

I loved working with my manager and the entire technical documentation (Information Experience) team. Everyone was extremely friendly, willing to help me learn and grow, and open to answering my questions and providing quality feedback. I made many great connections with people across the company. I also got to complete several real-world projects to help Viewpoint users, and I'm able to link to these projects in my portfolio and resume.

What I wish was different

I wish I'd been able to go into the office a few times, but so is life during a pandemic. I wish that I had perhaps pushed myself a little bit more and asked for maybe one more project, but I am overall very pleased with how the entire experience went and would hardly change a thing.

Advice

Ask LOTS of questions. Even ones you aren't sure about (such as on salary information, or company culture, or the perspectives of coworkers regarding your industry, for example). Don't be afraid about sounding "dumb" because a good manager and team will recognize that you don't know everything and will want to help you learn and improve. Always ask for critical feedback and always be honest and transparent with everyone you work with. As an intern, you don't really have anything to lose, so if you're curious about something, go for it!
