Treacy & Company

Summer Analyst

June - August 2022 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

+ I've had a few different internship programs, and this has been my best experience by far. Every intern is assigned a buddy that acts as a mentor. The first week of the internship gives a synopsis of growth and innovation consulting, training in Excel and PowerPoint, and how to effectively conduct research. + The culture is amazing! Everyone is dedicated to helping you grow, the company has weekly company happy hours, welcome dinners for new analysts, and firm-wide chats at the end of every week. + The work-life balance is above-average for the industry. You will rarely work more than 45-50 hours a week. You get a budget for office supplies, weekly free lunches, and a budget for fitness subscriptions/supplies (this applies to interns as well!) + You are able to take on a lot of responsibility as an analyst and have the opportunity to undertake some really challenging tasks + Meritocratic advancement structure + You receive regular performance reviews from your managers at the company to provide feedback on what you are doing well and how you can improve. At the same, direct reports submit upward performance evaluations to their managers to highlight ways that firm leadership can improve.

What I wish was different

- Work can be a bit unpredictable, but that is the nature of consulting. Some days you will have a bit of downtime, for others, you will have several hours of meetings and need to complete projects on a short timeline. - You are double-staffed on projects, so if you do not have experience juggling multiple projects it can be difficult to manage when you're first starting. As an intern, you will have your main project alongside your intern cohort project to simulate this work dynamic.

Advice

- Come in with an open mind. Stay late at company events to chat with your new colleagues. You'll learn a lot!

What I liked

- Great variety of work - Making meaningful contributions to the project even as a summer analyst - Phenomenal access to senior leadership - Tight-knit, young office culture lent itself to comfortable/casual atmosphere, no unnecessary formalities even when speaking to Partners - Reasonable work hours relative to this industry

What I wish was different

Nothing, it was great.

Advice

With regards to recruitment, take a scatter gun approach and apply to many firms. Master the case prep, it should be second nature by the time you apply for jobs. Don't be excessively formal, it is often better to be comfortably casual because it demonstrates confidence and likability. This applies to any interactions with people at the firm, whether it is in interviews or during the internship.
