What I liked

Trader Joe's is a wonderful place to work, mainly because of the style of management (which other places might refer to as HR) and the people you work with. At Trader Joe's, everyone is a crew member, even those who you would typically think of as a manger, which dispels the sometimes toxic environment you might find at other stores. The people who work there are also selected specifically to have an open mindset, hard-working attitude, integrity, and also for being kind and empathetic, resulting in an healthy work environment.

What I wish was different

Nothing. I was treated well, paid well for what I did, respected, and also became great friends with my co-workers. It was a very positive environment.

Advice

Don't expect that someone is trying to take advantage of you or your time. Of course, you should always have boundaries, but at Trader Joe's, if you treat your co-workers with respect you can expect that people will do the same for you.

What I liked

They treat their employees excellently and I have a fantastic corporate mission dedicated to great customer service as well as reducing their waste as much as possible. For instance, an employee is allowed to give a customer a bouquet of free flowers for their birthday and the company donates any good, but unsellable food to local charities. Not to mention, they are very flexible and willing to work with one's availability.

What I wish was different

Advice

You really have to have a genuinely friendly personality type in order to thrive in their environment. You will also typically have to be able to move around and do manual labour for the entire shift.

What I liked

The community and work environment in the business. The job is always teaching you new things as you develop communication skills with an eclectic group of people. The positive vibe throughout the whole workplace helps bring out the best of each employee. The benefits are a great bonus to the job. What makes this job so unique is the customers as they are the reason I enjoy working for the company.

What I liked

I love that there’s a very wide variety of people at Trader Joe’s — I work with people my age (including my younger brother!) as well as people much older than me. Trader Joe’s is very welcoming to people of all ages, backgrounds, etc. and helps give students their first and/or seasonal jobs, while also providing long-term jobs for adults and part-time jobs for retirees who may need an extra income. Everyone is so friendly there and it’s a good environment to work and learn in.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more variety in the tasks we could do, because sometimes it would get a little slow on less busy days — but that’s just how it is at a grocery store sometimes! Still an an asking experience, which is why I started working there during high school and now return over school breaks, such as winter break and some summers.

Advice

This is a great first job for high schoolers or college students, as well as a good job to do during school breaks when you return home.

What I liked

The environment at Trader Joe’s very positive and friendly. I have not had any bad experiences with customers, coworkers, or managers. Everyone is treated with respect and kindness, and integrity is one of the core values of the company. Crew members are given some say in what they’re doing each hour of their shift — running register, stocking shelves, serving samples, etc. It’s a great place to work.

What I wish was different

I honestly would not change anything.

Advice

Working retail can be exhausting, so make sure to take small breaks when you can to recharge a bit. And have fun with customers!

Definitely would recommend working here to get you through college. You have to have the sort of personality that can wow customers and generate sales through recommendations and demonstrations.
