What I liked

I really loved being able to help such a unique organization with their future grant connections. I also got the opportunity to work under an amazing mentor, from whom I learned an immense amount about grant writing.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been assigned more concrete tasks for the organization. I compiled research on proposed grants and programs for future proposals, but I did not actually do anything for the current organization.

Advice

TOSS Studio is a lovely organization with a great mission. The staff here has a lot of information to offer and can help you make wonderful connections. Just be prepared for it to be more of a school paper rather than actually working for a nonprofit.

What I liked

Kathryn is really great to work with. The studio space and atmosphere are one of positivity, encouragement and collaborative action. A lot of things tend to be happening at the same time. Kathryn gave me the freedom to work independently on a project of my own design, with periodic check-ins, which was both challenging and a good learning process.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have had more time to meet directly with and talk about my work with Kathryn.

Advice

TOSS Studio is great to work with! Definitely apply if you are interested in collaborative art-making practices, art education, community building, and/or creative opportunities addressing communities in the rural south.
