Topeka Zoo and Conservation Center

General Animal Care Intern

June - August 2020 • Topeka, KS

What I liked

I loved being able to interact with all of the animals of the zoo. Most zoo internships require that you focus on one area, but this internship allowed me to experience everything. I loved getting to observe training, help with painting, as well as getting to just interact with all of these amazing exotic animals up close. There were also weekly internship seminars about everything zoo, which allowed for more education based experience throughout the whole internship. I also loved getting to create an enrichment project for Hoho the Malaysian Sun Bear.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more communication between staff members and interns about expectations for the completion of the enrichment project, but overall it was a fantastic internship.

Advice

One piece of advice is that it is imperative to be curious and ask questions. Asking questions and asking to be able to do specific things not only builds a relationship between intern and keeper, but also will directly allow more interaction with the animals. Enthusiasm is key.

Assistant Zoo Keeper

May - October 2019 • Topeka, KS

What I liked

It was a job in the field that I am interested in pursuing. It was a great experience and I learned key skills I will need in the future.

What I wish was different

I only wish that my school schedule had allowed me to work into the school year.

Advice

It is very hard work. The job is physically demanding, but extremely worth it. Anyone wanting to go into the field of zoo keeping needs to do internships at zoos, and it is better off to start while you’re still in school. Zoo’s look for experience when hiring.
