Toledo Museum of Art

Publications Intern

June - August 2019 • Toledo, OH

What I liked

I loved my time as an intern for TMA. It was a very insightful experience and I learned a lot. I also met some great people along the way. TMA provided an inclusive space for all interns to work.

What I wish was different

I wish I had the opportunity to collaborate with other departments during my time at TMA.

Advice

I would advise interns to apply early! This is a great experience you do not want to miss. It's also one of the few paid opportunities for students who cannot afford to intern/work for free!

Cafe/Banquet Server

June - August 2018 • Toledo, OH

What I liked

I loved being able to work both in a cafe, a coffee bar, and a banquet setting. Coming from a restaurant experience I found it easy to adjust but still with much learning to be done. It was fun hosting events in the museum or glass pavilion and interacting with such a wonderful group of people. The environment was both serious and fun and I never felt like one overpowered the other. It was a great place with amazing people, and an awesome experience to put under my belt.

What I wish was different

The last two summers I worked a job at around 50 hours a week. Going from that to a high 30 was a little rough. But the hours I got were well worth it. Lots of cleaning and waiting overpowered customer interactions, but sometimes it was needed. Banquet serving is a very specific kind of hospitality and although it's not for most, it was probably my most enjoyable experience.

Advice

Days can be long and hours slim, but the people and the place make it worth it. It's a great break if you want to work but not be overworked.
