When I saw this posting on Handshake, I was so excited. I'm studying to become an optometrist myself, so I was looking for experience in the optometry field. The staff here is one of the most supportive I have ever worked with. The doctors always pull me into their exam room and explain interesting ocular diseases to me they found in their patients, or just teach me about the everyday life of an optometrist. I love this job because it's both a job and an internship. I'm gaining valuable experience for my future with doctors who are supporting my journey.
What I wish was different
There is not much I wish would have been different. The only thing that comes to mind is the pandemic, which is significantly limiting my hours here which means I am receiving less clinical experience. However, that patients are great, and I feel more confident in my path towards optometry school.
Advice
It's never too early to start looking for experiences in your work field of interest! I applied as an underclassman with low hopes of getting a call back. However, I got the call back, landed an interview, and I couldn't be happier with the place I'm at now. Start your search early, and have faith in yourself. Employers are looking for eager students with a passion for the field. It has nothing to do with your age.
