The Writer's Workout

Summer Intern

May - August 2022 • Maryville, TN

What I liked

I loved getting to read and provide feedback for dozens of different writers who submitted to the Writer's Games competitions. We read such diverse and varying short stories, and developed a structured critique system to give our best feedback. I also enjoyed getting to create a podcast for the final project, since I had never made a podcast before.

What I wish was different

I wish we had been able to Zoom virtually with the other judges and create more of a community among the interns, because I didn't really feel like I got to know them as much as I wanted to. I also wish there had been an aspect of the internship focused on how to develop a career in the field of creative writing/literary arts/fiction writing/etc, as a writer, editor, publisher, writing educator, or something else.

Advice

I think that it's important to make sure your goals and values are aligned with the place where you are interning or working. I definitely felt like I shared the goals of this nonprofit. This meant that even though the internship sometimes wasn't as well-organized as I wanted, I was motivated to keep going and putting forth my best effort in order to accomplish those shared goals.

What I liked

I really enjoyed the collaboration aspect of this internship. I was able to work on my professional communication skills and meet new people. I also really enjoyed reading the creative writing submissions. It was enjoyable and it expanded my critical thinking skills. Additionally, it was remote so I was able to work a full time job and complete this internship.
