As a psychology major looking to go to school for counseling, my experience at the woodlands was very helpful and gave me good experience to express in my applications for grad school. You learn a lot about working with different disabilities and you make so many sweet memories! Also the staff you work with is always so helpful and will be there to help you get adjusted to the new role!
What I wish was different
You do work a lot of hours when working each camp. There is also a big physical aspect that you will need to have to be able to work efficiently. You do a lot of lifting and helping campers in and out during personal care times so be prepared to do that.
Advice
This is a GREAT opportunity especially if you want to do something in the medical or psychology field. You get a lot of training that could be useful after you leave. Things might get overwhelming but you have to step back and remember why you are there and you are doing something great for the campers and giving families a break.

What I liked
I really enjoyed the experience of working with this population. I was working with individuals with disabilities. These ranged from physical to intellectual or developmental disabilities. I loved getting to know my coworkers and campers. The activities were a lot of fun and I learned a lot about personal care.
What I wish was different
I would have liked more time off. We worked long hours and did not get a lot of time off. This is typical for a camp setting, but you could get burnt out at times.
Advice
This is an incredibly rewarding experience, especially if you are going into a field such as healthcare, behavioral management, OT or PT. Make sure you are aware of the expectations and know what you are signing up for!
