The Watershed Institute

Stewardship Intern

May - August 2022 • Pennington, NJ

What I liked

I loved being able to get to work outside and be able to see the impact of the effort I was putting in as well as being able to interact with people from a variety of backgrounds to help engage visitors, volunteers, and summer campers with the outdoors and sustainable forest management.

What I wish was different

I wish it hadn't been so hot this summer

Advice

Make sure you keep track of what maintenance will be required after working on a project to make sure that the work that was put in doesn't go to waste.

Group Leader of 8-9 year olds

June - August 2019 • Pennington, NJ

What I liked

I loved spending all-day outside teaching kids how nature worked. We went on hikes daily, played in the stream, and every Thursday I stayed late with my team and the kids to cook the kids dinner over a campfire (if it wasn't raining).

What I wish was different

I wish I had incorporated more science experiments and stream science into my summer plans for the kids.

Advice

Keep in good shape, it is a lot of time outside and is very rewarding beyond the pay. This is a great job and tons of fun, but if you aren't flexible on a daily basis it can be frustrating. You need to like working with kids and other people. Even if you don't know anything about New Jersey and it's nature, you don't need to worry because the heads of the camp provide ample training.
