If only covid had not happened we could have got more accomplished. I would have not changed anything about my time here.
Advice
This was extremely rewarding first hand experience working with archaeological research. My faculty advisor and team mates shared so many useful tips about the graduate program as well. I would recommend applying for this internship.

Undergraduate Research Assistant
September - December 2020 • San Antonio, TX
What I liked
I loved working with my professor and learning how to handle machining equipment as a part of the Materials lab and also the Corrosion lab. As a mechanical engineering student, I got direct hands on experience of what it’s like to perform research as a career in the same field of study I am currently in. I feel more comfortable and confident using metallurgical lab equipment and, by far, was the most challenging thing to learn in any job I have had, so it’s gratifying when you push yourself to get out of your comfort zone and learn something new. Especially when you are passionate about the cause of the research project you are working for.
What I wish was different
I had to work alone some days and at times I wished that I had some company while I worked. But other days there was one or 2 people working on different projects of their own and it was nice to have a shared workplace where you can ask others what they are working on. I am a lot more productive though working on my own and enjoying the peacefulness of having the lab to yourself but I got a small drop of cutting fluid in my eye with metal debris by myself and I didn’t know where the eyewash was, but eventually found it after running around looking for it panicking. So be careful in the lab, ask about the safety equipment and if it weren’t for the pandemic, I know more people would be around to say where the eyewash was. So, I just scared myself that day honestly, but I wouldn’t change much about this opportunity. It is my favorite opportunity so far.
Advice
Be safe. Know where the eyewash and all other emergency equipment is. You could be asked to work with cutting tools, furnaces and different chemicals. And if you’re careless you could get hurt in the lab, so consider this before you make a choice. You will have to work deliberately and focus for many hours working with big and small tools, so don’t be discouraged if some work seems tedious because it may feel repetitive at times but it helps knowing you are free to create a schedule that works amazing with a full time school schedule. I was working in the lab and did 16 credit hours simultaneously and I loved that I could work in between my fall semester classes.

What I liked
I loved the variety of activities that I was able to do despite the circumstances. The internship was all online, but it was very well executed.
What I wish was different
I personally wish the hours would have been a little more flexible given the nature of remote work.
Advice
Do not be afraid to ask questions during lab meetings and make sure to attend every single one. Keeping notes and records of everything is an incredibly important skill to have.

Math tutor
June 2017 • San Antonio, TX
What I liked
Get to meet students from all walks of life, be it first time college students to people returning from school.
Also enjoyed satisfaction of better understanding math concepts and getting people to also enjoy.
What I wish was different
More traffic, a lot of times not many students or didn’t have questions, so had to stay there waiting.
Advice
The goal with tutoring is no so much telling them how to do stuff (they could find that online someway or another), but help them in identifying what the problem is asking and understanding concept in different ways as to be better able to adapt to new presentations of the topic.
